For the past 30 years, the mines near Tarazout, Morocco, have produced these mysterious, beautiful, and rare quartz perimorph geodes. Initially, they were thought to be pseudomorphs—quartz replacing other minerals—but they are actually perimorphs. Unlike pseudomorphs, perimorphs do not replace the earlier minerals; instead, they form a crust over them. Typically found within hard basalt, these geodes have unique formations that have sometimes earned them the name "stalactitic quartz geodes."
