The Metalia spagtagus, commonly known as the white sea gopher, is as beautiful as it is delicate. It’s a species of echinoderm in the family Heart Urchin. Heart urchins are usually oval or heart-shaped (hence the name). The test (internal skeleton) is rather fragile, with four porous spaces, or petaloids. Generally speaking, heart urchins spend most of their life burrowing into the sand on the sea floor. As you might have guessed, that’s where the sea gopher gets its name. They can grow up to 6 inches and inhabit the intertidal zone, down to depths of 130 meters—an interesting fact, considering how delicate these specimens are.
