I consider myself a connoisseur of female rock vocalists, and since I first heard Gemma burst onto the music scene with her remarkably mature debut Night on My Side, she has carved out her own unique niche in the music landscape and lived there (if not exactly comfortably, if many of her lovelorn lyrics are to be taken literally) ever since. This latest release is a curious hybrid of new, original material and re-purposings of lyrical themes from self-penned songs on previous albums. The first track, "Laughter," is Let It Break's pretty closer "There's Only Love" refashioned as a drummy, jangly drone, but it works to bring a new dimension to the familiar melody. The whole disc is pleasant and well-produced, but there are definitely some standout moments: "Iona"'s Cure-ish, looping bass line, "Palomino'"s irresistibly catchy gallop, "To Be Your Honey'"s harrowing intimacy, "Chasing'"s urgently repeated coda: "Say something that'll carry me away, say something that'll make me stay..." As always, I am jonesing for another new record from her ASAP. I got the Deluxe Edition Vinyl version of Bones + Longing from her Pledgemusic campaign, and that, too, is a beautifully made package. More Gemma, please.
