Snake fossils are really something of an interesting look into the evolution of today's slithering buddies. The word snake comes from the word form meaning “to crawl” which makes sense considering they have no legs (duh). They also have no external ears and rely on other keen senses to navigate the world around them. Their flickering tongues can taste the air around them. This is called chemoreception, which literally means the receiving (reception) of chemicals (chemo)
Evolving from lizard-like creatures, the fossil evidence for snakes is weak. Some fossil evidence suggests that they evolved directly from a burrowing lizard. Losing its two legs it became streamlined for burrowing. I guess having legs isn’t really a positive when you’re burrowing 24/7. While the mystery of their evolution continues, their fossils provide an ever so interesting glimpse into their past.
