50 year pocket?? Wow, It took a whole 50 years for these crystals to form! Just kidding. It takes millions of years for crystals to form within the earth. 50 years is a blink of the eye when it comes to the creation of fluorite. So what's up with the name then? Glad you asked. In mining terminology, a "pocket" is a grouping or vein of crystals found underground. Each pocket is named upon discovery. This particular pocket was named the 50 year pocket because it was found near the 50th anniversary of the mine's original opening. In a lot of ways, it's a celebratory pocket that not only has a collection of gorgeous fluorite crystal clusters, it's a little piece of history. Here's a bit more about fluorite in general.

Fluorite is a calcium crystal that crystallizes in the form of masses, cubic, and octahedral crystals. It was first referenced in 1530 due to its important aid in flux production. It’s a commonly occurring mineral with a majority of veins and deposits all over the world. Multiple colors have been known to commonly occur on the same specimen and are known to be found near quartz and Calcite.
