Description
Steve Turre has won any number of Downbeat Critic's and Reader's Polls and has been a fixture in the SNL TV band for nearly 30 years. He has, almost single-handedly squashed the trumpet-saxophone front line monopoly and has circumnavigated the globe several times. With Steve Davis, Frank Lacy and Robin Eubanks, Steve and company give ample testimony to the fact that the golden age of the trombone is now and put on display the many moods and capabilities of perhaps the noblest instrument in Jazz.

Steve Turre is one of the most outspoken trombone evangelists and this album proves his point that the power, expressive capability and melodic possibilities that the trombone opens up are not adequately appreciated in the jazz world. You would never put 3 tenor saxes or 3 trumpets with a rhythm section and think that ensemble would add much, but a trombone choir for the head followed by impressive soloing by all the players makes for some very powerful jazz. The fact that all the horn players at one time were part of Blakey's Jazz Messengers adds to a cohesiveness in ensemble playing and across solo playing that is a fine testament to Art's role as the world's greatest one-man jazz university. So even if trombone ain't your thing, the CD does belong on your shelf right next to the ABJM section.
