Description

Palaeocarcharodon, also known as the pygmy white shark, is a genus of shark within the family Otodontidae that lived about 61 to 55 million years ago during the Paleocene. It seems to have been one of the principal shark genera that appeared in the oceans after the Cretaceous that were now devoid of large marine reptiles.‭ It is arguably the most sought after Paleogene shark tooth in eastern North America. The striking similarity of these teeth, with those of the extant Great white undoubtedly feeds this collecting priority. Compared with Otodus (and most other sharks), this species' distribution is very limited in both time and space. ‬These teeth come with an info card that's handy to have when you're researching deeper into these giant sharks and trust us when we say, there is a lot. Their possible relationship with the great white is a very deep rabbit hole and we'd be here all day talking about it if we really went into detail on it. Not only are these teeth a cool new addition to your fossil collection, there is a scientific debate surrounding them.
