"We should make a record so we'll have an excuse to get together". Garcia to Grisman. This is a great compilation from Garcia/Grisman. Heard here are Garcia--vocals, guitar, banjo. Grisman--mandolin, mandola, banjo, vocals. Vol.1 has three tracks from previous duo albums. The remaining 12 tracks are the original, unadorned songs from the "Not For Kids Only" album. Originally embellished with other instruments, here they're heard in the original duo recordings.Vol. 2 has original versions of tunes that the duo liked to play, plus versions arranged for a band, but here (including "Friend Of The Devil") they are duo recordings. These tracks haven't been heard in 30 years until now. Vol. 3 is full of alternate takes from the "Garcia/Grisman", "Shady Grove", "Not For Kids" albums plus a few from Vol.2 in this set.The sound is superb--clean, clear, and immediate sounding. The separation of instruments and vocals is truly very fine across all these tunes. The 10 page booklet has short essays and track lists on the individual discs plus b&w photos of the duo. The discs snap into trays in the four-fold cardboard package. There's a full pocket for the booklet. If this type of music from these two fine bluegrass musicians is your thing--get this. The chance to hear the unadorned original duo recordings plus tunes not heard for decades is a real treat. All in all, a very fine release from Grisman's label.
