One day in August 1977, former Buddy Rich saxophonist Don Menza got together with drummer Pete Magadini's trio for a blowing session in Toronto, and this fantastic album is the result. It's soulful, high energy hard bop on a set list of warhorses, but if you think you're tired of hearing "Old Devil Moon," "Freddie Freeloader" or "Solar," wait 'til you hear how Menza and company swing the hell out of these tunes. The ballads "Poor Butterfly" and "I Remember Clifford" receive gorgeous, burnished performances. Wonderful, no-frills jazz by one of the best bands you've never heard of.
