This is the third book I've read by Kelly Key. As a fan of the Horror genre ... and more specifically, the supernatural or "ghost story" genre ... this book was my favorite of his to date. This author has evolved and this story offers an interesting take on the modern ghost story. The power in the storytelling is in the details ... and also that it isn't too detailed. We've all fought our way through pages of unnecessary details in so many stories ... this one was able to paint the picture for you ... while still keeping the pace. As with Key's other novels ... this reads very much like a screenplay and I found myself comparing it to some classic Clive Barker Horror films. The time period setting is also very important here ... a very gothic feeling of old America. It left me with an almost emotional attachment to the characters and I'm anxious that it's left open-ended for the possibility of a continuation of the story. A very convincing modern ghost story.
