Also known as a fairy cross, staurolites are fascinating specimens.
Staurolite is a mineral that is commonly found in metamorphic rocks. It forms when shale is strongly altered by regional metamorphism. It is often found in association with almandine garnet, muscovite, and kyanite - minerals that form under similar temperature and pressure conditions. The name "staurolite" is from the Greek word "stauros," which means "cross." The mineral commonly occurs as twinned, six-sided crystals that sometimes intersect at 90 degrees to form a cross. Speaking of crosses, it carries the interesting nickname of “fairy cross” as stated above but why one might ask.
Renowned mineralogist and folklorist, George F. Kunz, unravels the tale of Virginia folklore where the tears shed by fairies upon hearing of Christ's crucifixion transformed into these enchanting stones. It is believed that the sorrowful droplets from Mother Earth's fairies crystallized upon touching the ground, even being placed above Church entrances during the Middle Ages. This curious narrative, blending ancient folklore with Christianity, serves as a symbolic link between past myths and modern faith, offering a whimsical and thought-provoking glimpse into the interwoven narratives of history and belief.
According to Metaphysics: Staurolite works to activate and align the third eye, heart, and root chakras, bringing them into harmony. Its energy aids in communication with beings from your environment as well as the natural world. This mineral supports the highest expression of yourself by channeling powerful energy down to Earth. Staurolite has a calming, relaxing effect that helps release stress from the body, heart, and mind. It can reduce fears and anxieties and is believed to assist in overcoming bad habits and unhealthy addictions.
