The first third of this novel is a setup for the rest of it. The intensely personal story, told in the first person, of a Haitian woman who survived Trujillo's 1937 massacre of Haitians working in the Dominican Republic in 1937. It may be fiction, but it feels real. The writing gets better and better, with quite a bit of simple yet profound philosophy. By the end, I realized this is one of the most beautifully written novels I have ever read.A moving experience.
