The vampire squid (Vampyroteuthis infernalis, meaning "vampire squid from Hell") is a small deep-sea cephalopod found in temperate and tropical oceans. It thrives in extreme low-oxygen environments, using its bioluminescent organs and highly efficient oxygen metabolism to survive where most creatures cannot.
Unlike true squids or octopuses, the vampire squid has two long retractile filaments, placing it in its own unique order, Vampyromorphida. It is a phylogenetic relict and the only known living member of this ancient group.
The species was first discovered during the Valdivia Expedition and initially described as an octopus in 1903 by German teuthologist Carl Chun. It was later reassigned to its own order alongside several extinct relatives.
