Featured Specimen: Eurytides harmodius inaus
Location: San Francisco
The Harmodius Mimic Butterfly (Eurytides harmodius inaus) is a vibrant member of the
Papilionidae family that calls the Amazon and Andes regions of South America home. With dark brown forewings decorated with white markings and hindwings showing off red spots imitating other poisonous butterflies , this beauty knows how to make an entrance. You'll spot these rapid, erratic fliers gliding through forested areas with typical swallowtail flair, and their vivid coloration makes them a favorite among butterfly enthusiasts. Is it showing off those red spots on purpose? We'd like to think it knows exactly how good it looks.
